5 Reasons You Should Buy a Vacation Home on Chautauqua Lake
Buying a vacation home is a big decision. Deciding where to buy a vacation home is an even bigger decision. Picking the perfect location is a lifestyle choice. You only get so much vacation time and you want to be sure that the location of your vacation home will enable you and your family to get maximum enjoyment and maximum relaxation.
In this article, I want to zoom in on one particular corner of vacation heaven – Chautauqua Lake NY. Chautauqua Lake, which is roughly 17 miles long and 2 miles at its widest point, is my corner of heaven. I’ve lived in the Chautauqua Lake area since I was 2, and, except for a few years where my career took me away, I can’t imagine living anywhere else again!
Here are my top 5 reasons to buy a vacation home on Chautauqua Lake.
#1 – It’s a boat lover’s dream!
By this, I mean watercraft of all sizes. At the larger end of the scale is the Chautauqua Belle, which operates out of the village of Mayville, is a historical steamship that offers sunset cruises, fall foliage tours, and other scheduled sightseeing trips. Another option is the 200-year old Bemus Point-Stow Ferry that operates between Bemus Point and Chautauqua Institution. For boat owners, there are several docks, both wet and dry, where you can store your boat. When looking around for a vacation home on Chautauqua Lake, take time to research your options. Waterfront homes with lake access are the most desirable option for boat owners. But even if you can’t get your hands on a waterfront home, you are not limited to choice in terms of storage options. Many local companies provide a range of services helping boat owners to maintain, store and transport their boats.
#2 – Gone Fishing!
Chautauqua Lake is known for its fishing, and several fishing competitions are held here each summer. Whether you’re the competitive type, or you just want to spend a few hours on your boat or the shore tossing your line, you will find a lot to enjoy while out fishing. Walleyes, Paddlefish, Crappies, and several types of Bass are just some of the fish species found in the waters of Chautauqua Lake. Also, since the 1990s, the Muskellunge (also called musky) has experienced a comeback. With some musky being over 5 feet in length, this is one of the more exhilarating fish you can catch in Chautauqua.
#3 – Explore the many quaint Chautauqua lakeside villages
The shores of Chautauqua Lake are littered with delightful villages to explore. From Mayville, the County Seat of Chautauqua County at the northern end of the Lake, to the larger town of Jamestown at the southern end of the Lake, you have so many options. Between these two points, you can spend time in Lakewood, Bemus Point, or the ever-popular Chautauqua Institution. Less well known are the villages of Wooglin, Dewittville, Chedwel, Bayview, Colburns, Point Stockholm, Celoron, Cottage Park, Ashville, Long View, Hadley Bay, Woodlawn, and Prendergast Point which you can explore as you take a meandering drive around the Lake. As you explore around the Lake and visit these villages, you will discover a long list of amenities, beautiful nature, and activities. Take your time, relax and unwind.
#4 – Retail Therapy
The various villages around Chautauqua Lake offer a range of retail options. While Jamestown, the largest town in the area, can offer you the usual big box and chain stores, it is so much more interesting to enjoy the shops in the smaller villages. Many are owned and operated by locals and cater to residents and holidaymakers in the area. Take time to find the hidden gems and support local businesses!
#5 – Eat your way around the Lake!
There are many, excellent restaurants, bars, cafes, and breweries in the area. After some time, you’ll be sure to find your favorites that you go back to again and again. Until then, you have many options, and you can experiment to your heart’s content! From the Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood, the 2 Ames Restaurant offering modern-American cuisine with an excellent wine list in Chautauqua Institution, to the finger-licking pies at Portage Pie in Mayville, you really will be spoilt for choice.
