Mayville NY Homes For Sale | Mayville is situated at the northern end of the picturesque Chautauqua Lake. The area was first settled by European settlers in 1804 and became known as the Township of Chautauqua. The village of Mayville, as we know it today, was proclaimed in 1830. To this day, Mayville is the county seat of Chautauqua County. This charming village is the closest town to the famous Chautauqua Institution which means a brisk tourist trade in the summer. Come and see the charming Chautauqua Belle steamboat which operates tours from its moorings in Mayville. Built in the late 1700s, it is one of only five operating authentic passenger sternwheel steamboats left in all of North America!

Chautauqua Lake

Bemus Point Home For SaleChautauqua Lake is situated in Chautauqua County in Western New York. The lake is approximately 17 miles from end-to-end and just 2 miles across at its widest point. It is roughly 78 feet deep at its deepest point. Of the 41.1 miles of picturesque lakefront, 38.5 miles are privately owned.

The lake is notable for its fishing and several fishing competitions are held here each summer. Chautauqua Lake has been featured on The Outdoor Channel’s Major League Fishing. Walleyes, Muskellunge, Paddlefish, Crappies, and several types of Bass are just some of the fish species found in the lake. Since the 1990s, the Muskellunge (also called musky) has experienced a comeback. There is nothing more exhilarating than reeling in a huge musky that can be over 5 feet long!

The Paddlefish, a primitive fish related to the Sturgeon, was all but eradicated from the lakes and waterways of New York by 1900. Conservation efforts in the last several years have caused the population to slowly start growing again, including in Chautauqua Lake. The largest Paddlefish recorded in Chautauqua Lake back in the 1800s measured 78 inches in length and weighed a whopping 125 pounds! We can’t wait for these fish to once again become common in Lake Chautauqua.

The communities around Chautauqua lake include Bemus Point, Maple Springs, Mayville, Chautauqua (Chautauqua Institution), Stow, Ashville, Lakewood, Greenhurst, Fluvanna, Celeron (birthplace of Lucille Ball), and Jamestown.

Nearby attractions include:
